Dark pools definitely exist and are often used by institutions to move large parcels without affecting the price. If you don't know about them, don't have access to them, you're the dumb money (ie retail ie mum and dad). Read a reasonable amount about them and never heard if them being used to short, what would be the point?

Also, be aware of Secondary Markets, it's where you make your money before the stick goes public, which is where you dump your shares onto the public at IPO (Facebook). The key is to have a million in cash and 250k a year then you can get in.
