Is BSL embarking on an opportunity to use the Taharoa irons sand in its operation in PK? A few months ago the Iron Monarch was sold after a $17M refurbishment for coil and slab, the sale price was not disclosed but it is believed to have been at a significant loss. A recent article in a NZ publication referred to the Taharoa Destiny which is purpose-built and has loaded her first cargo of iron sands for discharge at Port Kembla. This has happened. PK uses lump iron ore in its B/F's but iron sands can be blended at up to about 10%. The only other 2 processes for converting iron sands into molten steel are BOS and electric arc reduction. PK no longer has any electric furnaces. PK does have BOS vessels but some have been mothballed due to the lower steel production. So PK may be able to use the iron sands in steelmaking after the gov'ts aptly named Steel Transformation Package, this would truley be transformational! There are also several disguised references in the BSL 1/2 yearly presentation. Could this make BSL profitable by relying less on the lump IO? This could re-rate the co. if they could pull it off.
