BHP Billiton chief executive Marius Klopper$ has rounded out a list of Britain's top-five earners as published by the Financial Times newspaper.
The 49-year-old boss of the world's largest mining company - dual-listed and headquartered in Australia - in 2011 took home £9.82 million ($A15.5 million) in salary, cash bonuses, pensions, and share options, reported the British broadsheet on Tuesday
An unnamed US fund manager defended the executive pay levels.
"You have to pay a lot of money for excellence," he told the Financial Times
"These people don't just turn up for work and drink coffee."
Mr Kloppers came fifth on the top-five British pay list behind GlaxoSmithKline's Andrew Witty (£10.75 million), AstraZeneca's David Brennan (£11.32), WPP's Martin Sorrell (£11.62 million), and Barclays' Bob Diamond (£20.97 million).
