Hello I am considering moving over to thailand for a year or so and would appreciate any comments and help in this area .
So far I am making plans to rent a modest house in chiang mai and over the last few months have been learning some basic thai so my language skills are quite basic but hopefully once I am setup over in Chiang mai will be going to thai language school to further my learning . I have a few questions in regards to what type of health insurance i could take out as I will be leading a fairly simple life over there with my girlfriend however anything could happen so if I am staying abroad for a year what type of travel insurance would be advisable and what is the approx cost .
In order to stay in thailand I have to cross the border over to Laos or any other country and have my passport stamped four times a year which is a mandatory requirement to stay in the country which is fairly easy .
During my time abroad once I get setup with a computer I am planning to do some trading in the commodities market and may also conduct some trades on the Australian market as a source of income . I think the safest approach would be to have say an Australian account setup with someone like Macquarie Equity which will allow me access to conduct trades of my choosing through their electronic trading platform and that way my trading account and funds are still based in Australia with an Australian Company which would be the best approach .
The next question is accessing or converting your money into thai baht and which is the best way to do this .
one option would be to take enough money with you on your person and then upon arrival in thailand you could have your money converted to thai baht but the idea of carrying a large sum of money around is not an ideal proposition .
My bank is CBA and I dont think they have conventional CBA atms over in thailand although I do believe they have money exchanges so perhaps I would just conduct a transaction through this medium for required amount .

    thanks for your help
