Hi Yotta, Your explanation is very impressive, but waaay too complicated. The maths involved is about year 8 level, maybe even primary level, and there's no trigonometry etc involved.
I did say there were no catches or gotchas, ie no sneaky tricks, so it's just a standard tent like any adventurer/hiker would use.
When I first heard the problem, like most I could only think of the North Pole but a colleague (a brilliant physics teacher and lateral thinker) suggested the part (2) extension which had me stumped, and when he told me the answer I couldn't believe how simple it was.
That then led to a logical part (3) but I won't trouble you with that.
I'll leave this with you a little longer, and trust me, it really is quite simple.
