Freehold, IMHO I believe you are wrong about the possibility of Santos being interested in farming in to any conventional O&G prospects in Indonesia and I make that assertion for the following reasons:
I have spoken to Santos about Indonesia and South Sumatra in particular and listened carefully to what they said.
If you read recent announcements by STO they articulate well their strategy in Sumatra ie to leverage off their experience with CSM in Australia
There are significantly less risks with CBM wells then conventional O&G drills
The costs associated with CBM wells are significantly lower as you don't need to use the expensive drilling muds and they are seeking methane in coal seams, much less risky than conventional wells
Santos previously was involved with a well in East Java which proved to be both a disaster for them, the local community and Indonesian government...it cost Santos $25M to get out of Lapindo and walk away with no ongoing liability.Very lucky indeed!(a substandard cement job was the cause)
Since that time Santos has always insisted on operatorship of any wells they drill in Asia and only bring in highly competent international professionals when they have a problem they can't manage or resolve themselves.
