I remember another defence boss around a decade ago - prominent in the East Timor stoush - I think he was appointed some sort of action man after the Brisbane floods - Cosgrove I think - he likewise did little to fix hazing and abuse on his watch.
Having watched AH in numerous press briefings I would just say - stay retired mate - the nation does not need you.
I am surprised people smugglers are not using larger craft - maybe old freighters headed for the scrapyard. Another scenario we should be alert for is people smugglers seizing a ship like pirates and doing a quick load of "asylum seekers" then heading for Xmas or Cocos - what could we do ?
