When on holidays last year , we met and spent about a week at the same holiday destination as some people who work at the Christmas Island detention centre.
I can assure you(from what I was told) that it is no concentration camp , but rather more akin to the other end of the accommodation scale except it's all for free. They communicate with those back home (on our provided communications systems) and tell them what to do , what it is like (more like winning the lotto IMO) and so on .
Make no mistake , this is largely a highly profitable well organised business racket .
The system is being rorted by the large majority of these "refugees". Once on our soil , they then use our legal and welfare systems to tie us "good guys" up in knots and live a gifted life compared to many of our own.
Lets have a quick look at a business plan :
Income :
1200/ month X $10,000 per head average = $12 Million/ month income before overheads.
Outgoings :
20 boats @ $75,000 each = $1.5 Million 50 crew wages @ $7,500 each = $0.375 Million
Employee Incentive Scheme additional to Base salary package:
Includes among other things , fully paid medicals and recouperation costs after the voyage at the other end in 4 star accomodation. Rest and recreation and a free flight home for all crew so that you are fresh and ready for your next assignment.
Costs for shore co-ordination personnel at departure point:
Overheads and incidentals : Allow $250,000 for "special gifts" to people in authority ,etc.
Total outgoings : $2.125 Million
Total Profit (rounded up): $ 10M approx.
You may factorize these figures however you wish , but you will still end up with a very big figure that some ASX listed companies would be proud of.
IMO the only way to stop this and weed out the "shonks" is to significantly remove the incentive scheme from the "employees" not the "clients" .
Then and only then will the genuine "refugees" come.
