The harbour facility is currently being used by IronClad Mining to export iron ore.
The project will pose mining, connectivity and tourism benefits for the region.
Visiting Whyalla on Tuesday, Mr Crean announced the federal government’s $2.2 million grant through the Regional Development Australia Fund (RDAF).
Mr Crean said the grant would leverage a total of $12.1 million in partnership investment as well as creating 230 new jobs.
“Our government is partnering with the private sector and the state government to upgrade the Lucky Bay Harbour and ensure this region maximises the benefits of
the mining boom,” Mr Crean said.
“The project has clear benefits for mining and tourism, with more efficient shipping channels for miners and improved ferry facilities for tourists and the community
between Wallaroo and Lucky Bay.
“This project is a great example of what is possible when you join the dots between partnership investment, local priorities and sustaining the social and economic future of the region.”
Mr Crean said the project would upgrade the Lucky Bay Harbour to establish a Common User Export Facility (CUEF) for the export of iron ore via an innovative transhipment system.
“The transhipment system involves the transport of iron ore by road train from the Wilcherry Hill mine near Kimba to Lucky Bay in sealed containers, and then by barge to a mooring point in Spencer Gulf where the ore will be
loaded into vessels for export,” Mr Crean said.
“This will enable greater profit margins with a feasibility study indicating improved margins of approximately $50 per tonne.”
Senator for South Australia Alex Gallacher said the project would make an important contribution to the local
community.
“RDAF is already making a significant difference around regional Australia with $150 million distributed to 35 projects through round one last year, including $15.89 million in South Australia,” Mr Gallacher said.
“Projects such as the Lucky Bay Harbour upgrade have been selected because they have leveraged funding
and demonstrated clear long-term regional benefits, including jobs and opportunities for the broader region.”
Sea Transport has signed an agreement with IronClad Mining to develop the floating harbour facility.
