Having a granny flat is a very good idea. Not sure what the laws are in Sydney at the moment.
I have a one bedroom granny flat on my property and I rent it out for $360 per week. That's a great help for families.
I understand you want it for your family for now which sounds like a great idea as they can be next door and still have some independence.
