My wife and I did three day walk sections of the GOR walking track ... they were all wonderful ... we based ourselves in Apollo Bay ... each day we drove to our final destination and left the car, taking a pre-booked walkers shuttle bus back to the day's start ... more flexibility than walking to a destination for a pre-booked pick up time.
There are at least two koala colonies that I know of down there ... good cafes and restaurants (perfect for the occasional intra-day politics moderation lol) ... fishing I guess ... and more.
A day return trip from Melbourne wouldn't do the region justice imo.
