It will come down to price. The eco friendly side will sell a tiny fraction like the Prius when it first came out - it has since come down in price and is selling quite well. The only way EV and hybrids will dent the petrol selling cars is when the price of them - at least the TOC - total cost of ownership - is comparable to the petrol car. We are a while off that yet. I like what Nissan-Renault are doing - and hopefully BYD or a new Chinese maker can pump out tens of thousands and bring the cost of an EV down. At least in California and Europe there are huge government subsidies to make them more competetive - but these won't last forever and eventually the car makers will have to bring the costs down themselves. Would you pay $50k for a 'Holden' Volt?
