@praseo: in modern lining technology You don't need mortar to fix the refractory bricks, the ring of bricks is really self supporting and under load is finally fixed by intruding melt. If You refer to videos might well be they are from former times.
There had been a technique to fix the refractory ring every 90° with an organic glue to the steel mantle for some time but this also is old stuff.
On the other hand there might be differences for silica linings which I am not familiar with, but I started to investigate into this very special field for rotary kilns.
