Within the patent describing use of said bricks it is clearly mentioned that the big advantage is, that You don't need mortar anymore. Believe me I definetily know they don't suggest to use mortar and it saves time and money.
I am living in Göttingen and have very close relations to the worldwide operating company Refratechnik. After 20 years a patent is free to be used by competitors, what else should they do but staying with old technology if not asking for a license.
