Iran is already selling its oil for gold to India (from memory - haven't double checked)

Syria/Lebanon as an Iranian "proxy" gave Iran great ability to project power.

Not only does it stand to lose this but the Sunni-Shiite war would move to Iraq.

This is a bit close to home for Iran. They lost 1 million in casualties in the war with Saddam. Also it has always been a strategic interest of Persia to control the Babylonian plateau.

Iran seems to be countering by increasing the heat. It has increased its proxy and covert attacks on Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Israel. It has invoked its 2008 mutual defence pact with Hezbollah and Syria. It is threatening to extend the war to Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Israel.

My feelings are that in 30 years Iran and the US will be allies. They have a lot of mutual interests and it is just politics that has them as adversaries.

As for the USD as reserve currency, I think China has started doing trade without using USD.
