BG reporter After auditing its entire operations, BCL management has now come up with a strategy dubbed Polaris II- intended to transform an ore diminishing nickel mine into a vibrant industrial giant in Botswana. The strategy will lead the mine to diversify and build an international enterprise bigger than the present BCL, as well as help the gradually dying town of Selebi Phikwe to become the third biggest city in the country. BCL made a presentation to government in November 2011 and the plan was lauded with government offering its support and commitment in writing. In order to ensure the strategy is realised and the plan is deliverable, the Mine management is already negotiating a memorandum of understanding to either go into joint ventures, leasing or exploration of mineral rights from all the companies in the surrounding areas. Companies courted so far for joint ventures include Triprop Concession, BML, Mabutsane and Dikoloti while others are being pursued. BCL will also explore and acquire copper resources in the current copper belt that extends from Zambia to the northwestern Botswana around the Gantsi area going towards Namibia. Over and above that BCL-a joint venture between Government and the Russian Company Norilsk- who are the largest copper nickel miners in the entire world, intends to conduct cross border exploration for minerals as well as acquire other companies willing to sell. General manager Dan Mahupela confirmed the 2012-2020 strategy to Botswana Guardian. He said their mission is to explore for coal, diamonds, uranium, iron ore and other minerals within Botswana. Among the things they are targeting is to go into coal concessions in Botswana, coal Stake-holding in African Energy, diamonds joint venture with Mantle Diamonds/Debswana and iron ore concessions. Part of the BCL strategy would be to identify viable contract mining opportunities by end of 2012 in light of the fact that BCL remains the only company operating a closed underground mine, and as such are better placed to offer their expertise on consultation basis when the lives of other open mines come to an end. BCL will also treat current tailings dump either on its own or via a joint venture and this will help them to earn more money. Mahupela said management has decided to restructure the company’s balance sheet and debt sheet to render the company debt free. Since the strategy will costs billions, BCL has engaged First National Bank Botswana (FNBB) as business partner to help prioritise opportunities and look at the financial implications and assist with investments both internally and externally. BCL will also develop a copper smelting facility to capture copper concentrates from local market (Botswana - Bosetu Matsitama and Mowana) and other countries including new mines in neighbouring countries. Management will also venture into parallel opportunities such as exploring coal to liquids and coal bed methane (CBM) and power generation. The strategy will enable BCL to develop sulphuric acid by capturing the smoke instead of taking it out into the atmosphere and then selling it to local mining industry for processing of their minerals. BCL will also build its own dedicated refinery to process copper concentrate and matte. A full time internal BCL Executive will be appointed to oversee, coordinate, track and report on progress of the respective projects under the strategy.
