Most Politicians are educated about nuclear power and that it is safe but being politicians they prefer something uncontroversial. They will flock to renewable energies because it appears they care and are doing something about the environment (I think renewables has a place in the worlds energy mix but there is too much waste of efficiency and money in all this hype).

I was reading a book recently about NSW labor government under Morris Lemma when he had the electricity privatisation issue and that he was adviced to add nuclear power which had great benefits but didn't even consider it due to the unwelcome controversy it might cause (I'm not even sure if it is a State power or not?).

The average person isn't interested in power generation and isn't going to bother researching the topic themselves to find out the truth but rely on what they hear from the media which is usually alarmist reporting because that sells airtime and newspapers. The nuclear industry needs to do some PR work and get the message out there to the public that nuclear power is very safe. Apparently they have a poor reputation when daling with the public.
