China Sports Lottery Technology Group upgrades network infra to cope with growth

By Storage Asia Editors | Sep 4, 2012

China Sports Lottery Technology Group (CSLTP), a state-owned enterprise, is upgrading its network infrastructure to cope with expected rapid growth in the lottery industry while reducing long-distance communication charges.

With a network that extends to 110,000 sites in 31 provinces, keeping the network up and running has become a full-time job that distracts CSLTP from fulfilling the group's strategic ambitions, such as achieving international standards compliance such as ITIL and CMMI, and adopting applicable best practices in finance, security and telecommunications.

The new network infrastructure, to be implemented by Dimension Data, will be built around an open architecture to ensure seamless integration with existing communication and data infrastructure, as well as support for multiple operating system environments. In addition, it incorporates IP-based communication, including digital voicemail, VoIP and video calls.

The new architecture is based around a Cisco Unified Communication Platform using IP telephony (IPT). A Cisco VoIP Gateway provides the connection between public switched telephone network (PSTN) and the Cisco Unified Communication IPT network. Each desktop is equipped with a Cisco Unified IP Telephone that unifies voice, data and mobile applications across fixed and mobile network. The Cisco Unified Video Advantage enables video calls over the same network.

"We recognize that having an efficient network infrastructure can help us reduce the cost of doing business while improving staff productivity throughout the organization," said Gan Lin, IT Manager, China Sports Lottery Technology Group. "At the time, it is critical that we have a secure and open network infrastructure so that we are able to develop new applications in support of yet-to-be discovered new business opportunities."

Dimension Data designed a virtualized IP-based voice network that connected all offices across the country. Office-to-office calls are treated as extension calls linked to the Cisco Unified Call Manager via corporate wide area network (WAN). This bypassed toll charges, virtually eliminating long-distance call-charges. Redundancy is built into the voice platform to ensure minimal disruption to daily business operations.
