If you want to talk forwards then in my opinion Shane Webcke was the one that got away from channel 9. How often in my life have I cringed as sports people "acted" in a commercial or recited a scripted endorsement. Fingernails scratching down a blackboard is a less cringe inducing sound than the voice of the average sports star endorsing the latest breakfast cereal.
But even when he was still a player I knew Webcke had real media appeal. He played parts in commercials as convincingly as he smashed opponents on the field.
It is little wonder that channel 7 were so quick to sign him up at the end of his playing career.
