""I do stand by the troll comment in the context of the opening post re a surveillance society." hmmm, pot calling the kettle black? A bit of thought police perhaps? Trying to control who can comment on a topic of interest? This thread is very relevant to crime in our society.

I, as in moi, controlling comment? For a start how could I?I am simply an ordinary poster here. I am about the last person to censor anyone(if I even could) so what is your evidence?Surely the lady doth project too much.

Easy to make these "moral" arguments from the comfort of your armchair and when you have never been in a position where you might need to rely on a CCTV to save your life, or protect a loved one or to prove a case against a rapist or worse."

Do you suggest discussing moral arguments from anywhere other than a comfy chair? How about asking assault victims straight after a smacking for their opinion on what should happen to whoever attacked them? Shopkeepers and shoplifters, rapists and victims, homeowners and burglars etc, you get the drift. Nuff said.

"So Jill Meagher is one of the sacrificial lambs that are required for your argument to stand?"

Now it is becoming silly. Please clarify that if you can and state how she became my "sacrificial lamb". According to the health warning on my ciggy packet that I am looking at now(it's from the government so it's gotta be true lol) 203 people were murdered last year. That's four a week. Did any of them deserve to die?
Probably no, is a fairly safe answer. So why is she special? The answer is that she wasn't. From same ciggy packet, 1700ish died on the roads and the same question could be asked. We are not discussing individual cases, no matter how personally distressing they may seem, but principles.

"I guarantee you'll forget your moral ideology if faced with the situation personally."

Of course we tend to forget "moral ideology" when faced with these situations personally. We all revert to the primal in extreme situations.See point above about asking victims right after a crime.
That is not how justice works. BTW it doesn't work with overly legalistic and technical justice system populated by inbred lawyers either.
As you used the word moral in para 2 in inverted commas, and now it has morphed into "moral ideology", I must ask, are you moral yourself? Do you believe that there is such a thing as morality or are you merely denigrating my idea of morality?

Back to the topic at hand, which, funnily enough happens to be the rise of the surveillance society, where do you draw the line? Should all phone calls be recorded? All web pages viewed? All emails? All cars tracked(all mobile phones are)? How about implants to keep track of us? Perhaps implants to detect "pre-crime", is that OK with you? It makes you feel safer so why not?

Personally, I just think that the reset button needs to be pushed.

    cheers
