Comparitively massive population in China plus government there is all pervasive, here it has very limited functions. The big problems there are certainly transparency and accountability. The new regime is going to try reforms. It's unsustainable.

I personally think we have some problems with those issues of transparency and accountability, too. But here it's because we don't want to pay taxes, we pay public servants poorly and don't give them real independence anymore, so that the public interest is some kind of an anachronism and the public service is politicised. Everyone is pursuing their precious careers. This leads to very poor long term policy outcomes. Both sides of politics pursue this process.

The federal government has been trying to resolve issues and get co-operation with the states, but it's just a stupid system. IMO.
