"The environmental lobby's determination to portray the Denniston Plateau as some untouched romantic lost world is dishonest and misleading.

"The plateau has been (underground) mined for over 100 years and is already a significantly modified landscape with only some areas in their original natural forms," Mr McManus said.

Bathurst's plans covered a small part of the plateau. The rest would be left untouched. The lobbyists' claims that there would be total destruction of a unique ecosystem and wholesale irreparable damage was "scaremongering", he said.
