South African farmer finds uranium Aug 9, 2005, 17:27 GMT
JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (UPI) -- There is no electricity and running water but a poor South African farmer is about $3 million richer after striking uranium on his land.
"We were overwhelmed. It is going to change our lives," Solomon Ngondo, 67, told the BBC.
Ngondo was tending his sheep and goats in the stony semi-desert of the Western Cape three months ago when he hit pay dirt.
His family had bought the land in 2001 through a government project to help those who had suffered during the apartheid era. But that required the family to invest its life savings and going into debt.
But now Ngondo has sold the mineral rights to the land to an international company for about $3 million.
Ngondo plans to get the utilities before long, the report said. "We are going to invest and improve the farm," he said. "I grew up with this lifestyle."
