I make the 1980 average gold price $1440 in US CPI adjusted terms.

My calc:

(230.379*/97.9**) x $612 per ounce.

**August 1980 US CPI index

(Please feel free to ignore this post if you think US government statisticians are liars.)

This is interesting, but I am yet to be convinced that 1980's pricing necessarily provides insights to current pricing.
