Invitation to Iron Ore 2005
On behalf of the Organising Committee of Iron Ore 2005, I invite you to join your iron ore colleagues from Australia and overseas and participate in this major international Conference being held at the Esplanade Hotel in Fremantle, Western Australia, on 19–21 September 2005. The Conference is being jointly organised by The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and CSIRO, with strong industry support, and is a sequel to the very successful Iron Ore 2002 Conference held in Perth in September 2002. Iron Ore 2005 provides a unique opportunity to learn about the latest developments in the genesis, geology, exploration, mineralogy, mining and processing of iron ores, including the economics and environmental impact. The associated trade exhibition and poster paper session will be an integral part of the Conference, with the poster paper session being held in association with the Welcome Cocktail Party to facilitate discussion.
The theme of Iron Ore 2005 is “Meeting the Challenge” created by the unprecedented expansion of the iron ore industry primarily driven by the massive growth in China’s iron and steel industry. To meet this demand, the industry is demanding more from its existing resources, processes and equipment, and new ore resources need to be identified and new mines and transport infrastructure established. The Conference has been scheduled the week after a meeting of the International Standards Committee ISO/TC 102, which is responsible for the development of international standards for sampling, analysis and physical testing of iron ores and direct reduced products. This meeting is also being held in Fremantle, so a strong overseas contingent is expected at Iron Ore 2005.
As a precursor to Iron Ore 2005, there will be an optional three-day pre-conference tour to a number of operations in Western Australia’s Pilbara region together with ISO/TC 102 delegates. The tour will include Mt Whaleback (BHP Billiton Iron Ore), West Angelas (Robe River Mining) and Dampier Port (Pilbara Iron), as well as the famous Karijini National Park. Spaces are limited, so register as soon as possible if you wish to participate. After the Conference there will be an optional two-day post-conference tour of Portman’s Koolyanobbing operations north of Southern Cross in Western Australia. This tour will cover geology as well as mining and processing, and will include a tour of the new Windarling and Mt Jackson operations.
The social program for the Conference includes a Welcome Cocktail Party, Conference Dinner and lunches, which will provide ample opportunity to catch up with colleagues and extend networks. Fremantle is renowned for its relaxed life style, historic buildings and fine restaurants.
I look forward to seeing you in Fremantle in September 2005.
