Sanctions
In December 2011, the United States lifted sanctions on South Sudan, but renewed its sanctions
on Sudan one month prior, partly due to conflicts in border territories: South Kordofan, Blue Nile,
and Abyei. The sanctions prohibit U.S. nationals from engaging in any transactions or activities
related to the petroleum or petrochemical industries in Sudan as a result of the conflict in Darfur.
