I'm not up to speed with the NBN, but I have just returned from the US for the second time this year. Each time I go there they seem to be further and further ahead of us.
Wifi is just about everywhere, restaurants, shopping centres, airports. At any given time your iphone will show wifi in your area. Some have passwords, some don't but ALL are free. Hotels don't charge for wifi anywhere that I have been in the US this year, - and that's a lot of places. In most cases it works flawlessly, and quickly.
