I have never seen this done but it raises an interesting question.. I think its not done usually for the following reasons:

-Capital cost is a lot more

-Maintenance cost is huge as you then have more individual parts which can fail AND if one fails, you still have to turn the others off for safety isolation

-You still have the same risk of failure as per above, the only added benefit would be if you could de-couple quickly and then take one motor to the workshed and fix while others still run

- Most common problems take under an hour to fix.. this is a design issue moreso than a maintenance issue so probably wasnt fore-seen
