It's not the level of oxygen in your body that stimulates breathing, it is the lvel of CO2.
Hyperventilating lowers the level of CO2 temporarily meaning that despite being in need of respiration your body doesnt respond by drawing a breath.
even at the most basic level of diving you will learn that Hyperventilating = chance of shallow water black out = possibility of death.
do this one at your own peril.
