I met Peter Scanlen (the son of the founder) about 10 years ago. He wasn't a spring chicken, but I recall he said that things went down once Hubba Bubba came in.
He moved into bubblegum dispenser machines that you see in shopping centres. He had thousands of them and they were very labour intensive to manage - I think there were a bunch of housewives that had areas and refilled the machines during school hours and worked on some sort of commission. Not sure if Scanlen is still around and heard that some other mob dominate this dispenser market now.
