US succeeded because people were suffering from a very poor economy, and anything which lower costs, generate jobs, and free the country from political blackmail was welcome. Shale gas was the answer, and they put up with the imperfections. Oil shale industry is not perfect, and so is flying; but that did not stop the travel industry.
Where the Yanks felt pain, the Aussies have just seen a mining boom, where many are still spending the millions they made. Unemployment is under control, food is on the table, the standard living is good!
Until we see bad times, the general public will remain complacent.
