I would be very careful believing people who have money to make on what the feeling of the town is. The Xmas tree incident was a beat up by a large woman who owns a run down barber shop near the tree and has a reputation for abusing anti gas people. She's the one that came out shouting at two little old ladies who had stopped to photograph the LTG sign that had been hung on the fence (not the tree). Talk of defacing the tree is complete fabrication. One of the little old ladies burst into tears when she was set upon and abused by the large aggressive woman.
A couple of old guys I know don't go to that barber anymore because of the crazy pro gas rants the woman gives the few old pensioners who sit there shaking while the sharp scissors whip around their ears. I guess cowcockie is one of her customers and find it strange he said "was unsure how people would respond re CSG" as it's well known that woman is very pro gas, maybe he's not local so didn't know that?
The real feeling in town as I see it is that that tree is a bribe. Sharing profits is one thing, a company going broke trying to buy a town by putting up an ugly plastic tree is another.
The young people I know in town hate it, they see it for what it is, a desperate attempt to swing public opinion the way of the gas company. Does anyone here honestly think the struggling company whose share price is in free fall would bother to put up a tree if they had good community relations? The only people that like it are the minority of people who are directly connected to gas or think they are going to profit.
here's a cartoon that appeared in a local paper, i think it's the true feeling of the locals about this tree:
