The problem with getting gas to the east is the massive cost of the pipeline.Any such infrastructure would cost 300-400% more to do in Australia than say in the US or Canada due to Aust labour costs,lower productivity, and the sacred sites and greenies along the way. It would make the cost of gas in the east way too expensive compared to gas from the Bass Strait, Cooper Basin , or even coal seam gas.
Eventually , if there are gas shortages in the east it would be cheaper for them to put in LNG receiving terminals and use LNG from the West.
