Terrific story Wayward-my Dad was my hero too!
Although I never deliivered papers I have fond
memories of walking through downtown Auckland on
a Friday evening with my father,each clutching a
packet of chicken and chips,on our way to catch the
Waiheke Island ferry,a ritual we did for two years.
On every street corner stood a kid,usually Maori,selling the evening paper.Each had their own unique call
and after a while could be identified streets away.
This photo is taken in Willis Street Wellington
in 1960 but the scene could be any NZ city at that time.
