They could pursue the offender with multiple charges to increase the sentence.
GBH, manslaughter, affray, D & D, causing a public nuisance, etc.
They'll go for one offence and then hope to get a conviction on that and hope the the judge actually gives a maximum sentence - how likely is that though?
The police will be able to do as little as possible to clear a case from their books. More charges = more work.
