It would appear the Bouncer got off becuase the jury felt he was justified in hitting Hookes with the purpose of defending himself not with the intention of killing hookes.
Maybe the message the jury is sending is to the drunks that bouncers are not fair game just because you are in a large group who have had to much to drink.
