I've seen them twice in my lifetime - they're like creatures of the deep sea: never to be seen. Tend to be a lightish brown colour. I suspect they are the noise makers within the ground that have tormented my cats, dogs and me as a kid over the years.
The main crickets we get late summer are just everywhere, but don't bother me in the slightest. In fact, I'm happy to see them as I know the extreme heat is virtually behind us from that point onwards.
