In this morning's Herald-Sun Susie O'Brien wrote an article that provided missing perspective on the recent rash of spin about Tony Abbott as he relates to women and their needs:

    Susie O'Brien commented:

" APPARENTLY, Opposition Leader Tony Abbott is not only a good husband, a kind father, but a nice boss as well.
However, we should judge Mr Abbott on his past public statements and actions, and not on the fact the women who are closest to him seem to like him. ..."

"... And now Ms Credlin has been rolled out to tell us that he's a nice guy who let her keep her fertility drugs in his bar fridge.
Who's next? His kindy teacher? ..."

"... However, the fact Mr Abbott supported Ms Credlin's IVF treatment doesn't change that in the past, he tried to restrict access to taxpayer-supported IVF for older women. ..."

"... Ironically, Ms Credlin, 41, would fit into this category.
Such comments reveal a total lack of sensitivity toward couples experiencing fertility issues. ..."

"... Mr Abbott has also spoken against lesbians and single women accessing IVF, further showing his lack of support for non-nuclear families unlike his own. ..."

"... Let's not forget that Mr Abbott told the University of Adelaide Democratic Club in 2004 that abortion should not be "reduced to a question of the mother's convenience" and that it was the "easy way out".
The speech, still on his website, gives us a true measure of this man. ..."

"... He was also health minister in the Howard government that brought in the "Pregnancy Support Measures" that included a so-called counselling line open to being hijacked by anti-abortion church groups.
The Liberal Party, led by Brian Loughnane, who is married to Ms Credlin, is obviously trying to address Mr Abbott's "women problem". But nothing in Ms Credlin's interview changes what we already know.
Women do have a problem: Mr Abbott and his socially conservative, judgmental views."

Indeed, based on Tony Abbott's record it appears as though everything's OK if the women in his life have a close relationship to him. But if you're unmarried like Julia Gillard, have a same sex family like Penny Wong or over 40 and not a member of Abbott's staff ... you may not be so lucky!
