it's called the 'dark pool'
a large trading house has clients that want shares sold
it also has clients that want shares bought
the shares are sold to the client who wants them without the trade being part of the open market
this is done off-screen, in house, and is known as dark pool trading
being with a large brokerage enables better fills
i've been the recipient of dark pool trading
at the time, i was equally mystified how i could get mine sold when sellers ahead of me were still in the queue
dark pool trading is not illegal
nor is it sinister in any way
algorithms are sinister
take home information:
dark pools refer to the in-house, off market movement of shares from one client to another at market rates
