So now we know. And it's significantly better than even the optimistic among us ever forecast. Today's announcement shows that, although SYR management have been cautious and conservative up to date, Balama really is the largest graphite and vanadium deposit in the world. The Inferred Resource has been calculated at 564 million tonnes, at a 9.8% graphitic carbon cutoff, and 0.21% V2O5 (vanadium).
Perhaps even more important for the first decade or so of operation, there is a zone (the Ativa Zone) containing 20.8 million tonnes of ore, at 20.8% graphite, and 0.38% V2O5, at a 13% graphite cutoff. A 13% cutoff? Ye gods! Most graphite mines never get near that level for their best ore!
Lastly, SYR have now explicitly stated that they:
"expect Balama to be one of the lowest cost producers in the world (including China)"
How good is that?
Cheers, Prime1
