Hard to see why someone would refer to shale oil/gas or even tar sands as "unconventional energy sources"...

Just the usual progress of drilling and production technology to exploit the massive hydrocarbon reserves distributed around the world...

The oil companies have been fracking wells for decades all over the world, and of course taking advantage of surface seeps and deposits probably since the time of the pharoahs...

It is becoming imcreasingly clear that the world is awash with hydrocarbon reserves and it is more an ongoing technological challenge to exploit them economically...

Of course if you give up and declare that it is this fantasy "peak-oil" without trying as the greenies seem to be demanding then of course you lose the game of life and revert back to the stone age with the only options the greenies seem to allow of 15th century windmills and unworkable weather dependent solar PV cells...

You can do that for yourslf and your family anytime you like as noone is stopping you as Ted KAzinsky seems to have tried, but dont even think about enforcing your regressive luddite views on me and my family...

If ever you wondered why most oil companies kept on investing and exploring for oil/gas and developing new technology despite the greenies "sky is falling/end of civilization" peak oil alarmism, this is probably why...

They just knew better that the alarmist and easily panicked apocalyptically minded greenie luddites...
