I live in North Qld, urban area, and my ADSL is a screaming 0.5 MBS...can' even watch YouTube without download waits. Telstra are apparently happy to wait for the NBN to upgrade, sometime in the indefinite future. I'm curious to see what happens when a cyclone cuts power. Without the POT power now supplied over copper cable, does every homeowner need to supply their own UPS for emergencies? I suspect that most folk enthusiastically supporting the NBN don't even know there is power supplied over the copper network, or that glass is a poor conductor of electricity.
