Telecommunications group SP Telemedia, in its first year as owner of Newcastle-based television station NBN, has improved net profit by 71 per cent to $16.5 million.
During 2004/05, SP Telemedia teamed up with B Digital, which sells fixed line, mobile and internet services, to become one of the largest independent IP-based voice networks.
SP Telemedia chairman Robert Millner said the company had established a unique business model with significant potential for growth. "This year we have been focused on integrating and rationalising the components of our business and next year we will start to see the benefits of our investment strategy flow through and each new company making full-year contributions," he said.
NBN, an affiliate of the Nine Network, contributed 48 per cent of SP Telemedia's earnings after tax. Consolidated revenue under management was $264.9 million, compared with $88.4 million a year ago.
SP paid a fully franked final dividend of 1.2¢ per share, taking the year's total to 2.2¢, compared with 1.5¢ in the previous year.
