I've always favoured the following derivation of that term
ex - meaning past tense
spurt - being a drip under pressure
The world is chock full of over-paid mediocrity - just look and the right downs the 'former' ceo's of Rio and BHP have presided over these few years .. but still their salary packages won't have taken a hit.
imo success is in equal measure: judgement, timing and good luck but we all persist in a belief in messiahs
