Much of the world’s population growth is taking place in emerging Asian nations, and so demand in the region for energy and food is growing exponentially. A rising middle class in countries including India and Indonesia will fuel consumption, putting pressure on current resources.

Thankfully, leaders in India and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations appear aware of these challenges, leading to food and energy issues sitting high on the agenda of the Delhi Dialogue V that is currently underway in India.

I Gusti Agung Wesaka Putra, the director general of Asean cooperation at the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, reminded leaders from both Asean and India that food and energy security will be one of the most important challenges governments face.

India is self-sufficient in rice but lacks other staple foods. Indonesia, with its vast land and climate conducive to agriculture, can help to feed not just Indians but millions of other Asians.

Indonesia has the capacity to substantially develop and grow its agriculture sector. Countries, such as India, which already have strong economic and trade ties with Indonesia, can become important customers.

But this will not happen on its own. Indonesia has done well in developing its palm oil sector but has been weak in growing other foods. A well-planned and well-implemented government policy to raise food production can create millions of new jobs, feed Indonesians and earn revenue from exports.

The rise of emerging Asia presents an enormous opportunity for Indonesia in many respects. The country stands to benefit from increased investment inflows, but if it gets its economic policy framework right, it can also be a major exporter of food to an increasingly urban Asia.
