Why don't they then? There are plenty of affordable areas for up and coming 20s/ Gen Y. Everyone has a choice, but your statement above is just wishful thinking. They are not thinking of housing, families, just themselves right now.
The only sacrifice is the train commute. They want inner city lifestyle, and they choose to pay for it.
Its always down to the basics of supply and demand.
