They are hunting for investors who are over leveraged via leveraged instruments like CFDs or a Margin Loan so if they can force the price lower the banks will be calling the person with the share account and demand them to deposit more margin. If the holder of the account can't afford it then the bank will sell the share on the open market thus achieving the shorter's aim and allowing them to get hold of your shares and buy it back at a cheap price.
