Dr Who, as an old bushy who regards modern computerised engines as the work of the devil, I am lost at talk of code problems etc.

But, I'm assuming its a common rail engine, the guy had put fuel into the filter and bled all the air out before trying to start it, that there is no blockage, etc?

And that it has sufficient fuel in the tank? Not a silly question, as some of these things need at least 10 litres of fuel in the tank, and the sensors to recognise this, before the engine will run.

I found something on this for you to think about:

I've started engines with no more than 5 litres of diesel in the past, but apparently thats not enough for some of these modern contraptions, and they need more. And obviously you cant start them with fuel from a 5litre can on the bonnet siphoning to the pump. That 10 litres+ of fuel has to be IN THE TANK.

Just a silly thought, mate. Some times the obvious isnt obvious. Good luck.
