Dude, a BOP malfunction could be detected at any time. Simply put, it is a series of rams that close/shut off the well to prevent hydrocarbons spilling out. They are usually operated hydraulically. They are operated to make sure they close in a specific amount of time. They do not need to be tested when something is flowing through it. They can be closed on wirleine tools etc which would/could send the tools to the bottom of the casings....that would be a bad day at the office. With the size of Rig BOPs it is a BIG job and can sometimes take weeks to change out/fix a BOP stack. Hope this simple explanation helps a little!
    Good luck all.
