I blame it on the airlines, how dare they drop their prices and allow people to fly to America for a reasonable price and let them shop and also have a holiday for cheaper than shopping here alone. they have let down the retail industry badly, no wonder its tumbleweeds
we should go back to the good old days when flights to the US were about 40% dearer than Europe on a per km basis
perhaps we need new measures to support commercial real estate, controls on how many commercial buildings can be built, tax on goods bought overseas by holiday makers and grants to landlords for making so much money, its outrageous that we give so much support for residential and there is nothing but crumbs and insane rent to support commercial landlords
the government should realise that the Aussie consumer is a better class of consumer, able to dedicate 110% of their income to support rents and mortgage payments whether it is commercial or otherwise, they should get in there and support it, as always its up to the reserve bank to do the job of government, thank god savers are being taken to the cleaners with low IRs and debtors, the true holders of wealth in this country are reaping the rewards
